Wow! What a start to a season!
In one of the most competitive, week 1 showings of The Voice, we may have already seen the eventual winner.
The coaches were dumbfounded by the incredible Shi’Ann Jones, just 15 years of age, who sang “Drown In My Own Tears” with maturity of a seasoned soul singer.
Lucas Holliday, the cashier from Lancing, Michigan, displayed beautifully controlled vocals with a huge range, in his cover of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work”. Jhud turned her chair and just stared, numbly repeating “He’s white – he’s white”
There was the 4 chair turner Keisha Renee, the gospel singer who loves country music, brought some cool soul chops to Don Gibson’s country classic “I Can’t Stop Loving You”. Keisha chose team Blake.
Another country discovery Ashland Craft, from South Carolina bravely chose to sing “You Are My Sunshine” in the style of Chris Stapleton. The result was a three chair turner and a comment from Blake Shelton “There’s been nothing like you since Gretchen Wilson”.
But our pick for week one standout is Brook Simpson from the small Haliwa-Saponi tribe in North Carolina. From behind a tousled mass of hair came a voice that was powerful, warm and intense. She understood the lyric of the song, knew when to put her foot on the gas and knew when to be tender. It will take a great singer to beat this girl!
